About Google Chat

Google Chat is available within Gmail.  It allows you to send and receive instant messages with other people who are on the network using Gmail. If you'd also like to see and hear who you're talking with, you can download Google's free voice and video chat plug-in.

  1. How do I invite someone to chat?
    The first time you want to chat with someone, you must invite them to chat.  After they accept your invitation, they will appear in your chat list and you may chat with them any time in the future.  See: Inviting someone to chat.
  2. How do I start a video chat?
    First, you must download Google's free voice and video chat plug-in and install it on your computer. Then sign in to Gmail and click the camera icon next to the appropriate name in your Chat list.  See:  Make a computer to computer voice or video chatNote: Video chat also is available in Google+ through the Hangouts feature.
  3. Can I chat with multiple people?
    Yes, you can chat with several people at once using Group Chat in Gmail. If you want to start a video chat with multiple people, use the Hangouts feature in Google+.
  4. Can I use chat in Google+?
    Yes - Google Chat is available in Google+.  However, if you want to start a video chat in Google+, use the Hangouts feature, which allows you to video chat with one person or several people at at time.
  5. Are chat sessions recorded or archived?
    If you chat "on the record," your chat history is placed under the Chats label in your Gmail account.
