El Corazon means the heart.  Its image is derived from Card 27 from a Mexican bingo game known as Loteria.  The image of the heart has often been used as a symbol in Mexican and Latin American art.  El Corazon (the heart) can serve as a symbol for courage, sprit, love, affection, compassion, sympathy, or as a term of endearment.  Artists have approached the heart as an expression of burden, whimsy, broken, sentimental, devotion, and sacred or divine love.  Artists are called upon to create their version of El Corazon (the Heart).

Dia de los Muertos Altars & Shrines Exhibit & Evening Workshop on Photo Op Cut Out Panels

Friday, October 31, 2014, 7pm to 11pm.  Peanut Gallery, 114 N. Houston

'Dia de los Muertos' or Day of the Dead is the Latino variation of the Catholic holy day of All Saints Day.  On November 2, Hispanic families gather at the graves of family members to honor deceased loved ones.   In addition families prepare altars which are decorated and display offerings (ofrendas) to deceased souls.  The purpose of the altar is remembrance.  The idea is to create a place that commemorates the accomplishments and life of the deceased.  These altars are typically bright and colorful and are not designed out of sadness or mourning, but out of joy.  The centerpiece is usually a photo a departed family member or whoever the altar is dedicated to.  Also photos or statues of patron saints as well as offerings are placed on the altar.

Artists and/or groups are asked to create an altar or shrine for El Dia de los Muertos.  No zombies.  The altars and shrines must reflect the customs and tradition of altars and shrines for Dia de los Muertos.  Artists, groups, or organizations please contact Steve O. Black at (903) 815-3665 to sign up for working on a Dia de los Muertos Photo Op Cut Out Panel.

Perschon, known as the Steampunk Scholar, defines steampunk as an artistic expression that mixes three features: technofantasy, neo-Victorianism, and Retrofuturism.  Think Jules Verne; the television series and movie the Wild, Wild West; and Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  Common Steampunk materials includemetals like copper, brass, steel and iron, rivets, gears and cogs, wood, glass, antique light bulbs, and leather.
