Patient Care Technician

Description

Patient care technicians are on the front lines of healthcare, providing patients with comfortable living conditions, assisting them with daily activities, collecting patient vitals and working with supervisory staff members to ensure quality patient care.  While not required. It is strongly encouraged that students take Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy, and EKG prior to taking this course. Students must enroll concurrently in both NUPC 1020 (96 classroom hours) and NUPC 1060 (64 clinical hours) to complete the program and to be eligible for the certification examination. See requirements below, which must be completed prior to enrollment.

Included in your tuition are the required textbook, study guide, practice tests and one attempt at the licensure exams which is scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable. This course may be eligible for additional funding sources, if the applicant qualifies. Successful program completion earns a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award.

Drug Screening and Background Check:

Grayson College will schedule a mandatory drug and background screening for this class. This is required, and failure to pass either screening will result in dismissal from this course. If you have concerns regarding your background information, please reach out to us prior to registration.

Immunizations:

Please note that some immunization series take up to six months to complete.
Immunization series must be completed before the program start date.

• Varicella (Chicken Pox) - Proof of either:
  • two documented doses of varicella immunization
  • OR a titer blood test confirming immunity
• Hepatitis B Series - Proof of either:
  • a completed three-injection series of Hepatitis B vaccinations,
  • a completed two-injection series of Heplisav,
  • a titer test confirming immunity (positive reading)
• MMR Series - Proof of either:
  
  • a completed two-injection series of MMR vaccinations
  • a titer test confirming immunity (positive reading)
• Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (TDAP) within the past ten years
  • DTAP or TD not acceptable
• Meningococcal Vaccine - Proof of either:
  • one dose within five years and at least ten days prior to the first day of class
  • ID verifying the applicant is twenty-two years or older
• Influenza Vaccine - Most recent variation
• TB Exam - Proof of either:
  • a negative blood/skin test within the last twelve months
  • a negative chest x-ray within five years
• COVID Vaccine
  
  • Grayson College does not require this vaccine, but some clinical agencies
    may. Medical and religious waivers are considered, and requirements are
    subject to change. It is your choice to receive the COVID vaccine; if you
    choose not to attend your clinical education placement due to a vaccine
    requirement, we will try to accommodate your request. However, we
    cannot guarantee you an alternate placement, which may impact your
    program completion.

Additional Requirements:

• CPR: Obtain or hold American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic
  Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider level CPR certification.
  • Uncertified PCT students will certify in class
  •  All CPR classes must include a skills performance check-off and be
    current within two years
• Pre-Entrance Physical Exam and Health Statement: Students must have a
  signed physician’s form attesting to their physical and mental ability to perform
  PCT responsibilities. Please take this physical form to your appointment.
  
  • Visual acuity with/without corrective lenses to identify cyanosis, absence
    of respiratory movement in patients, and to read small print.
    o Hearing ability with/without auditory aids to understand the normal
    speaking voice without viewing the speaker's face and to hear monitor
    alarms, emergency signals, call bells, and stethoscopic sounds.
  • The physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, perform
    cardiopulmonary resuscitation, lift patients, and move or maneuver in
    limited spaces.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form, to speak
    succinctly and clearly, and explain simple patient care tasks.
  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned skills.
  • The ability to function safely under stressful conditions, adapting to ever-
    changing clinical situations involving patient care.
  • The ability to meet the performance, physical, and/or lift requirements of
    the assigned clinical agencies.

Clinical Requirements:

• Students must prepare for a varied clinical schedule, potentially including
  day, evening, or weekend hours and varying in length from normal class hours. It is essential for students to provide their own transportation to clinical sites.
• A clean, professional appearance during clinical days is a must. Students
  are required to wear navy scrubs and proudly display a student patch.
